BYZANTINE EMBROIDERY

The Byzantine embroidery is inspired to the ornamental motives, founding in the capitals and in the bas-reliefs of a lot of churches in Ravenna (for example St. Vitale or Sant'Apollinare in Classe).

A lot of columns capitals (some of which graven directly in Bisanzio and subsequently transport in Ravenna), some graves friezes and the famous “carved ivories”, bring ornamental motives of clear Byzantine origin (for example peacocks, doves, tufts of acanto, grape clusters), have been taken as model for an embroidery type.

Only in 1930 a real school of embroidery was founded in Ravenna, the “Byzantine Ars”, defining stitches, warp, motives and colors proper of this type of embroidery, sumptuous as the artistic style that has inspired it.
