PAINTED ON SILK (SERTI)

 

Fabrics decoration has great traditions.

In antiquity the Chinese knew methods of silk workmanship and art to paint it.

About 1700 years before Jesus for the first time was realized in China the industrial workmanship of the silk.

Many mineral and vegetable colors were used to paint silk and they used particular techniques of dye.

Stencils and clichè were used for fabric press.

The secret of the silk workmanship in China was jealously maintained for a millennium.

About 200 years before Jesus the silk was known in Korea and in India and then through the great transcontinental of the caravans, nicknamed Road of the Silk, it reached Mediterranean harbors.

Greek and Romans appreciated cloths of silk but they ignored production methods.

About 100 years before Jesus the Chinese silk was known in almost all the world, but its production remained exclusive China monopoly.

About 300 years after Jesus was exported in Japan techniques of silk weaving, press and dye.

About 550 years after Jesus two persianis monks brought to Bisanzio, hidden in their batons, worms and seeds of mulberry introducing the silk crop in east Roman Empire.

Arabic domination spread silkworms breeding in the whole Mediterranean. .

The silk art produced in China and in Japan a lot of artistic forms and also conditioned silografis and typographers.
