Castel Sant’Elia became famous for its most significant monuments, such as the Sanctuary dedicated to Maria SS. ad Rupes and the saint Elia basilica (the above – mention sanctuary), within the Monastery belonging to the Micaeliti Fathers of the congregation of Saint Michael Arcangel with the modern Saint Joseph church. To arrive to the "Holy Cave", where we can find and venerate a painting representing the Virgin Mother adoring the Infant a sleep on her lap, it’s possible to go down the 144 steps hollowed out in the tuphus at the end of the XVIII th century by the heremit Joseph Radio during 14 years work. Close to the "Cave", in the custodian’s’house there’s a little museum where the Holy Vestments dating back to the XII th/XIVth centuries are collected. We can arrive to the Saint Elia basilica going through the village centre from the asphalted road running along side the cliff and opening towards a green valley. Built during the VIII th century on a pre-existent Benedictine coenovium, for its sober majesty and solitude the basilica represents a monuments of an incomparable beauty, over looking the whole Suppentonia Valley. The unusual architectural motifs of Lombard origin are inserted on the traditions projects (schemes) of the paleochristian basilicas found till today in the architecture of Latium.and representing a specific feature with its Byzantine modules. The facade, with three portals, shows its elegant decorations through the lateral lunettes. Inside there are three naves and the truss structure roof, as well its precious "Pergula" rebuilt during the XII th century by the ruines of Presbyterian enclosures dating back to the VIII th/IX th centuries. On the high-altar there’s an elegant and refined ciborium. The frescos on the apse and the transept (IX th century) are attributed to the Roman brothers Giovanni and Stefano and their nephew Nicolò.
