D1 - VPN Specification - Executive Summary

Keeping in mind that the final objective of the project is the implementation of IP VPN services over the EuroSkyWay satellite network, the deliverable starts with an over view of satellite networks in chapter 2. Chapter 3 deals with VPN services. Topics such as VPN security, VPN Quality 0f Service (QoS), VPN products performance, satellite IP VPNs, are discussed. Chapter 3 concludes with the discussion of the current and e xpected market size for VPN services in the shipping and construction section.

Data shows that shipping and construction market are an important parameter in financial world. Companies that belong to these markets have the peculiarity of potentially having mobile workers, sections and quarters, as well as clients over highly distributed areas. This fact makes it difficult for the ship p ing and construction companies to provide computer network services to every worker and every client without using satellite networks. Moreover, since security plays an important role in the market, VPN services are essential in providing reliable computer network services over satellites and need to be implemented carefully, since there are quite a few parameters that affect their proper operation.

D2 - EuroSkyWay (ESW) Network Analysis

To support the Consortium effort in the REVENUES Program, this document provides an analysis of the EuroSkyWay (ESW) Satellite Network having in mind the utilisation of this network for the provisioning of the VPN services. It is the deliverable associated to the entire WP2000 . The ESW analysis is divided in four parts:

EuroSkyWay Network Configuration (WP2100) for the world-wide system in which it is introduced the EuroSkyWay multi-regional approach with the interconnections with other terrestrial or satellite networks to reach the access to global services. Several models are presented to describe the configuration in terms of:

EuroSkyWay Network Operations (WP2200) for the baseline system which consists of the complete ground control segment and a space segment with geostationary satellites covering the so called Extended-Europe areas. In this part of the document there is a description of the functional architecture with both the control and management information flows. Particular emphasis is placed on:

- ESW Distributed Switching Architecture:

- ESW Traffic Segment:

EuroSkyWay Network Services (WP2300) which are classified in different categories:

- Connectivity services

- Naming services

- Security services

- Mobility Support services.

EuroSkyWay Analysis for the Virtual Private Network services (WP2000) where it is assessed the concept of ESW VPN provisioning based on the Intelligent Network (IN) architecture and making use of the ESW network infrastructure. The analysis reveals the need for upgrading the Basic Call Process (BCP) of ESW network in order to be compliant with the IN processing model. The EuroSkyWay Network Connectivity therefore has to be enhanced with the EuroSkyWay VPN Service switching function to obtain an ESW service switching point (ESW-SSP); in addition also a service control point (ESW-SCP) function and a service data point (ESW-SDP) function have to be added to the current ESW network architecture. A mapping between the IN functional entities and the ESW network elements is then presented.

D3 - ESW VPN Service Specification

The ESW VPN System Specification provides the description of the Virtual Private Network (VPN) in the context of the ESW communications envi ronment. In this environment each access is controlled to permit connections only within a defined community of interested, and is constructed through some form of partitioning of a common underlining communication medium.

The ESW VPN will be based on the Intelligent Network (IN) architecture and will use ESW network infrastructure; this means that the Functional Entity foreseen by the IN concept will be distributed among the ESW network nodes (NCC, VPN Service Nodes and so on). The document is organised as follows:

D5 - Business Plan

The intermediate business plan has been issued. The final business plan is planned for July 2000. In the following the executive summary of the intermediate business plan.

The preliminary analysis conducted during this first year of activities allowed EuroSkyWay to identify the following as key application that will provide the drivers for the generic VPN service market:

and to identify the following as key factors that will provide the extra drivers for the VPN over satellite service market:

According to the relevant importance of the key drivers, the following sectors of users are potentially interested to EuroSkyWay VPN :

In particular, the retail banking and manufacturing are examples of huge markets for the VPN EuroSkyWay . The retail banking sector has a structure of distributed branches that very well match with the Virtual Private Network structures. Moreover, EuroSkyWay Satellite Network and the related VPN Service guarantee the security aspects. This is an important point, since in 2000 the security is still perceived as a major pro blem with VPNs. The manufacturing industry is another sector of major importance in the wide area services market. The manufacturing business have large network requirements for applications such as inventory management between supplier distributor and the manufacturer itself. The relationship between these companies and the resulting infrastructure is necessary complex: shared network allow the simplification of the task facing the manufacturer's IT department allowing significant reduction of costs.

EuroSkyWay Satellite Network is a satellite based backbone offering connectivity services to all the Europe. This implies that a Service Provider can offer its service of VPN based on the EuroSkyWay VPN covering all the Europe and in particular the above menti oned countries.

The main strategy of EuroSkyWay is to involve a defined number of customers since the beginning to facilitate the understanding of the customer needs in order to provide a world class service. The EuroSkyWay distribution channel will be us ed to provide and sell the EuroSkyWay VPN Services.

EuroSkyWay business efforts are divided in each major country. It is planned in the following way:

EuroSkyWay plans to divide in three regions its business development efforts to provide services with the final constellation. Region One covers the Europe, Middle East and some ex-USSR countries. Region Two covers the Western Par t of Asia while Region Three covers the Africa.

The following policy will be used for the pricing approach:

A preliminary estimate of the revenues have been calculated assuming that EuroSkyWay share of the total Satellite VPN service Europe is 35 %. A further assumption is that EuroSkyWay takes 45% of his service providers revenues. With these hyphotheses, the financial analysis shows EuroSkyWay revenue for more than 250 million dollars by the year 2008.
