A few images of the city of Fiumicino.
Originally was a suburb of Rome, becoming autonomous in 1992.
Fiumicino, and the intercontinental airport, are tightly connected to Ostia.

The name of Fiumicino originates in the XI century from "Foce Micina" (small mouth).

The first village (borgo) of Fiumicino was built under project of the architect Valadier around 1820.

The great development of Fiumicino comes together with the airport "Leonardo da Vinci" in the
years 50's and 60's.

The main church of Fiumicino: "S. Maria Porto della Salute".
The church was part of the so called "Borgo Valadier", the
original village built between 1823 and 1828, and including
customs, post office, hotel, the "Health Factory", tavern,
and private houses.

Niccolina Tower. The most inland of
the 3 storical Towers of Fiumicino.
Built in 1450 under Pope Nicoḷ V.
Initially on the seaside, today is
about 2 km far from the sea.
The pedestrian mobile bridge and, on the left, the statue of Our
Lady looking at the sea.
The statue is placed about in the same place where rised the
"Torre Clementina".

The "Torre Clementina" was built in 1773 by Clemente XIV.
Destroyed by germans in 1944, unfortunately no part is still
existing, except in the old photos or prints.
The Tower had a square base, 10 meters
each side, and was protected by many guns.
Alessandrina Tower. Also this tower was originally located
on the seaside and, during the centuries, moved away.
Consequently the tower lost its defensive function and was
included in the largest building of the customs..
Someone says this is not the true "Torre Alessandrina".
The church of Crocefisso, built between 1780 and 1787
with care of Card. Ruffo. You'll find the church on the left
side of "via del Faro" just after the bridge "2 Giugno".
The pilots Tower
The Castle of Porto (L'Episcopio). Placed on via Portuense close to the archeological site of the "Ports of Claudio and Traiano".
Looks like a true medioeval town, its first news seems to be of 1018, in a papal bull of Pope Benedetto III.
Almost always under the ecclesiastic control, fortified by Pope Callisto II in 1200 and Pope Sisto IV in 1500, in the Middle Ages it
was an important defense point. Inside the walls you'll find a beautiful church with a relic of S.Ippolito.
The fountain of 5 moons.
The old lighthouse, no more in use, is located
between the two parts of the mouth of the
Tiber river, in the area of "Isola Sacra" (Sacred
Island), so called because, from the time of
roman emperors, was destinated to cemetery.
