We both graduated at the Trieste Special International School for Interpreters and Translators (approved by the European Community). Combining language and IT expertise, Luigi was the network manager in charge of the design, installation and maintenance of a dedicated system for leading translation agencies. We have been working in the field of translation since 1982 when our PC was a Kaypro 10 running under CP/M OS, with the tremendous storage capacity of 20MB!

During the last 10 years we played an important role in setting up the localization department of CrossGap (former Intracoop Bologna, Italy) and Logos (Modena, Italy). We also collaborated as localizer and Project Manager with some of the largest international translation agencies, and among others: Intracoop (now CrossGap), Berlitz, Logos, Alpnet, Bowne Global Solutions (Los Angeles and Milan Sites), Holland Translating Services, ILE, Binari Sonori, Interlang. On many occasions we have been asked to take complete control of a project immediately after its inception, collaborating directly with the software houses concerned.

The following table summarizes our contributions to a number of these projects.

Glossary

  • Installation of the original product and study of its functions. Construction of a basic glossary and/or update of the old one.

Software

  • Translation of menu items, strings, etc. using word processor or special tools. Initial resizing was carried out at the same time. Some projects also involved using Visual C++ and Visual Basic (we sometimes do anything to please!).
  • Building and testing of the application (occasionally providing input on debugging as well).
  • Building of a complete glossary by extracting corresponding terms from the English and the Italian versions using macros for the .RC and other tools for the .DLL files. Approval of terminology by the customer and updating of the online glossary for translators of help and general documentation.

Resizing

  • Resizing of windows, buttons, etc. Stretching of Italian phrases where required and building and testing of the localized product. Dynamic updating of the glossary.

Screen Shots

  • Capturing of areas to be put in help and documentation. Images drawn from scratch for screens that could not be displayed.

Help

  • Translation of .RTF files. Localization of related files (i.e. .CNT, etc.) using the appropriate tools.
  • Translation of indexes and contents (automatically, when feasible).
  • Construction of hyperlinks using macros or other automatic tools where applicable.
  • Building of the .HLP file with complete functionality and consistency testing.

Manuals

  • Translation based on the dynamic glossary. DTP as required and insertion of figures/screen shots.
  • Index and contents. Updating of cross-references and styles localization.

Final Proofreading

  • The final proofreading is done by two people - the translator and the project leader, with the first reading her/his translation while the other follows the original text and running software. Back translation by a mother tongue English translator is used as a further control for highly crucial phrases, or when technical information is not available.

Having gained considerable experience in the field, we aim to establish new stable ongoing relationships with leading agencies.

We would be happy to travel to your headquarters if you require a direct contact when setting up new big projects.
