Thanks to the toss of cowry shells (consecrated shells), people initiated and well prepared can "read" what energy is protecting the person who asked for the consultation.
A man, when he born, is protected by an ORIXÁ, a sort of guardian angel, who follows every step of his life. The toss of the cowry shells reveals the Orixá you belong to. People's actions are understood individually in terms of their personal Orixá.
Moreover, it's useful to know which energies are present in our life so we can try to increase them if they're positive or move them away or even get rid of them if they're negative.
Unlike Orixás, these energies (called Odú in Yoruba, African language used in Candomblé), change and can be manipulated obviously by people well prepared and qualified.
