CHIVA IN ITALY

Fausto Passariello

In august 2003 the Italian College of Phlebology (ICF)
published the Guidelines for the Management of Venous Diseases.

In this document Chiva is recommended as one of the possible strategies
for Shunt I correction, while Chiva 2 is recommended for Shunt III
two steps therapy. Note the properly used shunt classification!

However both recommendations have been assigned a C level of evidence.

Besides, on November 2003, during the last Congress of ICF,
the greater part of papers involving venous diseases were
dealing with Chiva, so testifying that Chiva knowledge in Italy
grows continuously and that nowadays this technique is
generally accepted in the everyday surgical practice.

And in these last years, Italy and Spain share the role of countries
where the anatomical, haemodynamic and surgical research in Chiva treatment
has reached a great level of evidence.

Italy is also the second cradle of Chiva, i.e. excluding France,
Italy is the country where this technique has first gained
a good level of practice.

Furthermore most important topics of Chiva were born in Italy,
where they encountered a strong initial opposition.

Italy is also practically the only country in the world
where there is an active research in computer management
of cartographic data and in the theory of vascular nets.

Finally, don't forget to join the

VIII RÉUNION DE L'ASSOCIATION EUROPÉENNE DE CHIVA

which will take place in Italy from 21 to 22 october 2004.
