The "metropolitan"1 city of Catania is one of the largest in Italy with almost 800.000 inhabitants (1.100.000 in the province) and its subway is the first in Sicily and one of the most modern in Italy. It was opened the 27th of June in 1999 and it's in operation since the 11th of July in 1999. Service is by FCE, Ferrovia Circumetnea, that works in Catania since the 19th century providing public transport from and to the chief town and other towns of the hinterland. The current subway consists of just one line serving six stations. The length of the line is increasing and there are many new stations under construction. In the next years there will be another service along the coast provided by RFI, Reti Ferroviarie Italiane, currently under construction.

TRAINS
At the present time,
four Firema trains,
realized just for the catanese subway at the end of the '90s. They are in
operation since 2001. Before three Breda/Fervet trains (E 105, 109, 110), from ex
FCU, were used.
Other four Firema trains are under construction.
