Psycho, the Bates motel.

Marion meets Norman.

After wandering for a long time on the road under a heavy rain, Marion is turned off towards a secondary road; she barely sees trough the windscreen the neon of an hotel sign.

VACANCY shows the sign. She`s welcomed by Norman Bates, the hotelkeeper: he`s a spooky good-looking young man.

He says to be living with his old mother in the house near to the motel. He passes all his spare time doing taxidermy (he stuffs birds). Actually, motel walls are decorated with fascinating but frightening birds.

Marion argues that his mother makes nothing to encourage Norman`s dates with girls.

Visibly shy but equally fascinated by Marion, Norman chats with her, and he offers her a small dinner before her going to bed.

Norman is a lot attracted by Marion: when she goes in her room and undresses, he peeps her through a hole in the wall:

The motel and the house

The house is as sinister as the motel.

Hitch will tell in his book Hitchcock-Truffaut:

"The actual locale of the events is in Northern California, where you will find a lot of houses like the one of Psycho: they're either called "Californian Gothic", or, when they're particularly awful, they're called also California Gingerbread!"

For sure, the atmosphere of the house contributes a lot in the restless setting of the film:
