Soave is a quaint village located in Veneto, land rich in history and
culture 14 miles from the major town Verona and 19 miles from Vicenza.
The historical centre is hugged by the elegant walls of the medieval
castle and is situated close to the National Road 11 (Strada Statale 11)
and to the Soave-San Bonifacio exit of the A4 highway Milano-Venezia. The
territory of Soave rises in part of the Val Tramigna, a small valley that
starts from the last Lessinan range and ends in the Po Valley. The municipality
comprises of the historical centre and a large number of very small districts
(“contrade”) and isolated peasant houses (“corti”) spread over the rolling
hills that reach 1030 feet above sea level in Castelcerino. |
The village has a very ancient history. The first proof of any existence
of human settling comes from the prehistoric age, but the village
obtained a certain importance only in the Roman age as a “Pagus Romanus”
along the famous road Postumia. In the early Medieval Age the village became
one of the most renowned “pieve” (religious and cultural centres) of Verona.
The first written witnesses that mention the territory of Soave and its
castle, date back to the X century. A certificate issued by Federico Barbarossa
in the 1100 states that the owners of the castle were the Sanbonifacio
Counts of Verona. In the same period the Sanbonifacio Counts’ palace was
erected as well, the oldest residential palace of the town, today seat
of my winery.
Later the Scaligeri, lords of Verona, modified the town-planning and
defensive aspect of the medieval town constructing public and private buildings
and reinforcing the castle. The town walls of Soave, requested by Cansignorio
around 1375, with its battlements and 24 towers, have survived various
and bloody historical events for 7 centuries and now they are among the
best known and the best preserved of Italy. |
