It
is the city etrusca for excellence whose all over the world famous graves
welcome to the walls the most archaic paintings of the italic civilization.
The actual inhabited area extends him, in sight of the Tyrrhenian Sea, on
the before hill to that where the ancient Civita rose; here the rests of the
ancient center are still visible, one of the most important of the
confederation etrusca, together with Vejo, Vulci, Caere and Tuscania. Among
the city etrusca and the today's Tarquinia it prepares him in the subsoil,
to few meters deep, one fed series of graves (around 6000, you dig in the
calcareous rock), an about sixty of which it welcomes meaningful wall
paintings. Among the most beautiful we find: the grave of the "Auguri"(530
to. C.), of the "Hunting and of the Fishing" (520-510 to. C.), of the
"Leopardi"(470 to. C.). Her paintings reproduce scenes of hunting, banquets,
games, animals, floral elements, raced of horses, demons etc... In the
Building Vitelleschi is found one of the more important archaeological
museums of the region.
