To
the right of the main altar is the chapel dedicated to St.Charles Borromeo.
The bond of friendship between Philip Neri and Charles Borromeo prompted
the dedication of this chapel to the Cardinal. Their friendship began in
Rome where St. Charles his first years of religious life. It developed through
the years and gave rise to a fruitful collaboration in which the energetic
priests helped to implement the reforms arising from the Council of Trento. The
friendship also included some lively confrontations as when Philip had
to resist the attempts of Cardinale Borromeo to transfer him to his diocese. Nevertheless over the course of their lifetimes, St. Charles was greatly
influenced by his friendship with St.Philip and the idea of the Oratory. The chapel, the work of Carlo Rainaldi (1611-1641) is decorated with
paintings celebrating the life of St.Charles. Particularly beatiful is
the work of Carlo Maratta (1625-1715) which hangs over the altar. St. Charles
and St. Ignatius of Loyola are pictured at the feet of the Virgin. St. Charles,
on his knees shows his motto 'Humilitas', while Ignatius
standing, present to Mary the gift of the his order. The angel seen over
the throne is of great beauty.
