La microanalisi video mi ha insegnato a vedere come funziona l'intricato processo della comunicazione momento per momento tra madre e bambino. E' un potente strumento di ricerca, trattamento e formazione. Devo il mio amore per la microanalisi video a Daniel Stern.

La microanalisi video o filmata opera come un microscopio sociale nel mondo della visione appena sotto il livello percettibile in tempo reale. Gli eventi comunicativi tra madre e bambino si verificano in meno di un secondo (Beebe, 1982). Essi sono così rapidi e sottili che non si possono per nulla afferrare in tempo reale. Rallentando i movimenti la microanalisi fotogramma per fotogramma identifica momenti di straordinaria bellezza, come quando i due partner si alzano sempre di più in raggianti sorrisi. Tale tecnica rivela anche momenti molto disturbanti, come la rabbia materna o le espressioni facciali di disgusto, o quando il bambino diventa freneticamente stressato oppure tanto allarmato da apparire come congelato. Videoregistrando le madri ed i bambini con la tecnica dello schermo diviso, cioè con una videocamera che riprende ciascun partner, possiamo vedere il dialogo momento per momento tra i due. 

Sin dalla nascita i bambini vivono in un mondo sociale diadico, a due persone, e sono capaci di coordinare i loro comportamenti con quelli del partner (Peery, 1980; Trevarthen, 1979). Ogni partner si coordina con l'altro in una mutua regolazione bidirezionale. Di seguito descriverò in che modo la regolazione bidirezionale divenne un contributo chiave dell'"infant research" per una teoria psicoanalitica dello sviluppo e del trattamento.

Questo sistema di comunicazione rapido faccia a faccia, che studiamo tra madri e bambini, opera anche tra gli adulti. Dato che il linguaggio verbale non è disponibile per i bambini piccoli, dobbiamo provare a comprendere il loro linguaggio non verbale. La comunicazione faccia a faccia tra adulti è molto simile a quella tra madre e bambino. Gli aspetti non verbali del comportamento, come i cambiamenti di sguardo, le piccole variazioni nell'espressione facciale o nell'orientamento del capo, l'innalzamento delle sopracciglia, sono quasi impercettibili, ma estremamente importanti nell'influenzare la comunicazione. Questa rapida, quasi automatica elaborazione sociale è ampiamente non conscia, al di fuori della consapevolezza. E' una forma implicita, procedurale, basata su una sequenza di azioni, di elaborazione. Essa è probabilmente basata sulla capacità  evolutiva di adattamento al bisogno di una rapida elaborazione ed azione interpersonale al servizio della sopravvivenza. Frank Lachmann ed io siamo stati affascinati dai parallelismi tra la comunicazione madre-bambino e la comunicazione non verbale nel trattamento degli adulti. Questo restare affascinati ha alimentato la nostra collaborazione per tre decadi.

LO STATO DELL'"INFANT RESEARCH" QUANDO ENTRAI ALL'UNIVERSITA' NEL 1968

Quando entrai all'Università nel 1968, al "Teachers College", alla Columbia University, la microanalisi empirica della comunicazione faccia a faccia madre-bambino non esisteva ancora come campo di ricerca. Era proprio agli inizi. Daniel Stern pubblicò il suo primo articolo nel 1971; Colwyn Trevarthen nel 1972; T. Berry Brazelton, Barbara Kozlowski e Mary Main nel 1974. Edward Tronick, un allievo di Brazelton, presto divenne una figura di spicco alla fine degli anni '70. Lynne Murray, un'allieva di Trevarthen, e Jeffrey Cohn, un allievo di Ed Tronick, così come Alan Fogel, Tiffany Field e Michael Lewis, tra gli altri, erano attivi all'epoca. Questi ricercatori iniziarono a lavorare con campioni provenienti da comunità a basso rischio allo scopo di comprendere il corso dello sviluppo normale. Due decenni dopo, cominciarono ad essere inclusi i fattori di rischio, come la depressione materna (Field, 1995).

Il decennio degli anni 60 aveva generato un insieme di lavori che Stone, Smith e Murphy (1973) riassunsero come concernenti "il bambino competente". Ciò inaugurò una fase di studio della comunicazione madre-bambino, che comprendeva il ruolo di un bambino piccolo come essere socialmente competente e dotato di iniziativa. Nel 1968 Bell pubblicò un lavoro che aiutò a passare dal paradigma della ricerca sullo sviluppo del bambino ad una visione sistemica interattiva. Egli afferò che la maggior parte della ricerca all'epoca aveva enfatizzato l'influenza genitoriale sul bambino, un modello di influenza uni-direzionale, con la relativa esclusione dell'influenza esercitata dal bambino sul genitore.
