Sixty years ago, T. Berry Brazelton, a pediatrician with a growing private practice in Cambridge Massachusetts, and Instructor in Pediatrics at the Harvard Medical School, began investigations to support the vital resources of neonates as emotional and sociable human beings who seek responsive companions. Using his own humanity to make intimate contact, he brought to light principles of responsive engagement that benefit the survival and flourishing of a young infant, and he described a set of behaviours that can reveal developmental disorders in early stages and make it possible for their consequences to be better anticipated, understood, and treated. He showed new mothers and fathers what an aware and sensitive person their baby is at birth, and how enjoyment of sharing new life benefits their relationship and the future development of the child's self-confidence and skills.

Within a few years, Berry became a major contributor to a revolution in scientific understanding of human nature. Traditions of medical practice and the psychology of intelligence and its instruction had become trapped by the idea that we human adults, who strive every day to become articulate and civilized with measured intelligence and legally confirmed status and relationships, were born as delicate and dependent organisms, not only ignorant of language, but with no mind or ability to share purposes and feelings with other human beings.

Now we have a rapidly growing psychology of the foetus that confirms what a mother can sense while she is pregnant - that there lives within her an active being who may respond to her touch or voice and musical sounds, and know habits of her day. This confirms Brazelton's insight into the talents for self-expression and learning that may seek intelligent and affectionate companionship within minutes of birth.

Margaret Bullowa, introducing a book she edited to present path-finding studies made in the 1960s and 70s of how infants and adults communicate 'before speech', made this comment: "Until recently most scientifically minded people in our culture considered infants incapable of communication since they don't talk. Of course mothers know otherwise but scientists and other 'experts' haven't always taken them seriously" (Bullowa, 1979, p.1). In that volume, Berry Brazelton begins his contribution entitled 'Evidence of communication during neonatal behavioral assessment' with the same protest: "The old model of thinking of the newborn infant as helpless and ready to be shaped by his environment prevented us from seeing his power as a communicant in the early mother-father-infant interaction. To see the neonate as chaotic or insensitive provided us with tie capacity to see ourselves as acting 'on' rather than 'with' him" (Brazelton, 1979, p.79).
