Your Excellency
I am writing to protest at the continuing detention of Mordechai Vanunu who
has already served 15 years in prison of a 18 year sentence for telling the
world and the Israeli people about Israel having by 1986 produced a
stockpile of 100-200 nuclear warheads, in spite of continued reiterations by
the Israeli government that Israel would not be the first country to
introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East.
At least he is no longer in solitary confinement, having served the first
11½ years of his sentence under these inhuman conditions. I understand that
after serving 2/3rds of his sentence he became eligible for parole under
Israeli law, and he did indeed apply for parole at that juncture and has
since. It seems however that such parole has continued to be turned down on
security grounds even though the reason given for his release from solitary
confinement was that he was no longer a threat to Israeli security.
I consider Vanunu performed a service to mankind in blowing the whistle on
Israel's secret nuclear weapons programme. You may not share this view, but
I hope that you will at least agree that he has suffered enough for his act
of conscience and ought to be granted parole. To continue to refuse to
allow him parole on the flimsy grounds advanced smacks of a desire for
vengeance rather than any concern for justice.
Please convey these views to your government.
For peace with justice
