| La
storia : A Karen McCoy ( Kim Basinger ), esercitando il
pericoloso mestiere di rapinatrice di banche è accaduto l’
inevitabile, è finita in carcere e si è fatta 6 anni nel
penitenziario di Athens. Ora ne è venuta fuori, libera sulla
parola. Ma la sua situazione è tutt’ altro che rosea, l’ ex
marito nel frattempo si è risposato e ha raccontato al figlio
Patrick che la mamma è morta. Come se tutto ciò non bastasse,
riappare un certo Schmidt ( Terence Stamp ), che ha bisogno di Karen
per un nuovo colpo. Per convincerla al colpo non trova di meglio che
rapire Patrick e ricattarla : la banca da rapinare è la famosa
Union Bank di Atlanta, considerata di massima sicurezza. Il fatto è
che Karen un piano per violare questo sancta sanctorum dei dollari
ce l’ ha già, perfetto per entrare e decisamente singolare per
uscirne. Con l’ aiuto del ladruncolo J.T. Barker ( Val Kilmer )
metterà a segno un colpo da 18 milioni di dollari e riavrà suo
figlio. |

is vintage Rockford Files chase scene fare. Oh well, since she
lost an arm and a leg in the Boxing Helena fiasco, Basinger can
be expected to take on a dog or two to pay the rent. And that' s
the real McCoy”. |

Ebert on Movies ( sito internet ) : “That
isn' t the kind of question that occurs to anyone in the movie,
however, since they have apparently learned everything they know
by studying other bank caper movies, none too deeply. The
screenplay by William Davies and William Osborne is a dim-witted
formula job, providing the bare minimum of plot and character as
defined in TV crime shows made for those not paying full
attention. I don' t know about you, but I' ve had the feeling
during a lot of recent movies that the characters are not human
but replicants, programmed to have only those thoughts and
emotions necessary for furthering a simple little plot. Look at
the way the kid is handled in The Real McCoy, for example. He' s
basically a MacGuffin - a device to make Basinger agree to rob
the bank. The big scene where he finds out she' s really his
mother is hurried over as a bothersome plot point. Nor is much
done with the character of Basinger' s only friend, J.T. ( Val
Kilmer ). He' s an incompetent small-time stick-up artist who
admires her reputation and becomes her sidekick ( romantic
possibilities are left mostly unexplored ). What is his function
? To provide her with someone to talk to, I assume, the notion
of a solo heroine being too vast for the filmmakers to encompass.
Much more time is devoted to the schemes to outwit the security
cameras and bypass the defences of the big bank vault ( although
by the standards of a good heist movie, this vault is a pushover
). And the character of Schmidt is laughable ; he's your
standard movie villain who lives on a vast estate with a
sadistic bodyguard ( and tigers prowling the grounds ). He is
cloned, in other words, from Bond movies, Beverly Hills Cop and
countless other films. How does he support himself ? Why does he
rob banks ? Answers to either question could provide an
intriguing story, but this movie just plugs him in and runs him.
The film' s one redeeming merit is Kim Basinger, a good actress
who has a sweet presence here. I cared about her character more
than the character deserved to be cared about - and more, I
suspect, than the filmmakers did”. |

The real McCoy asks you to swallow : that while Karen McCoy (
Kim Basinger ) was married to a peckerwood used-car salesman in
Georgia she picked up the skills necessary to become a notorious
bank-heist artiste, said skills including a knowledge of
explosives, alarm systems, computer software, and various
high-tech toys used to scale walls and break into safes. That
she would come out of a six-year prison stretch looking better
than when she went in. That the local Mr. Big ( Terence Stamp )
would plan a theft for a measly $ 18 million when he already
belongs to the snootiest country club in Atlanta and keeps a
pair of tigers on his estate grounds. That he would want McCoy
to mastermind the job of getting past the bank' s
state-of-the-art security ( she was on ice for six years,
remember ? ). That he would kidnap her young son ( Zach English
) to force her to sign up, and that she would avoid telling the
kid that he is, in fact, her kid. That, above all, she would
find a petty-theft klutz ( Val Kilmer, who left his charisma at
home ) even remotely attractive”. |
