 Santa Maria Infante

by Mario Rizzi

and traslated by Fabio C.  Filosa

Another district of Minturno is S. Maria Infante which is also situated on an olive-grove hillside. Risen in the XIV century with the name of “S. Maria de la Lefanto”,

It changed its name in 1447 into “S. Maria de Olivano”, in the XVII and XVIII centuries it was called “S. Maria degli Elefanti o Dello Levano o della Leffola” and eventually took its current name S. Maria infante in 1826. Inside the church there is a polychromatic marble baptistery of the 1700’s. A canvas representing the “Madonna of Grace with Saints Erasmo and Francesco Saverio” painted, most likely, by Conca.

The district of Santa Maria Infante was almost totally destroyed during the last world war, because the “Gustav Line” ran nearby the town.
