 Tufo di Minturno

by Mario Rizzi

and traslated by Fabio C.  Filosa

On the eastern ridge of a hillside cultivated with olive trees there lies the district of Tufo, named this way maybe for its vulcanic tufa soil (cutin). Tufo was built after the destruction on behalf of the barbarians of the ancient village of the “Cristine” from further south. At the centre of the town there is a monument in memoriam of war victims and a church dedicated to the patron saint, S. Leonardo, since 1571.

On the central facade of the church there is a terracotta statue of S. Leonardo, sculptured by father Guglielmo Schiavina and placed on Nov. 6, 1968. Inside the church, in some niches, there are the statues of “Saint Anthony, Saint Leonard, Saint Lucy and of Our Lady of Sorrows”. The baptisimal fountain is made of raw stone covered with copper.
