For questions about moving here: | This web site documents our travels from the USS Alaska (SSBN-732) Gold Crew, Naval Submarine Base, Bangor, Washington, to the decidedly different locale of Naval Support Activity, La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy, Home of the USS EMORY S LAND (AS-39)
We have now been living in La Maddalena since October 1999 and absolutely love it here. There are many reasons for this, but I think the biggest one has to be the very warm welcome we have received from both the Navy and the local population. Dan finds the walk from the Piazza (where we hang out and drink cafe latte) to the house to be the most painful half mile in the world. There's a better than 50/50 chance that anyone we pass by will either know Katrina or will know Zachary (seems all the Italians know Zachary), and we will be doomed to stop and chit chat for at least four hours. Ok, so maybe not four hours, but I could translate the book of Maccebees from Hebrew to Lithuanian in the time it takes to get from here to there when I'm with Katrina.. This website is primarily a showcase of our photos and our experiences since we left our house in Bangor, Washington. Click on any of the links to the left to view the photosets, conveniently thumb nailed for your...err...convenience
The fine print: A note on the photographs: Acknowledgement is also due to Nina Beheim, an excellent photographer of her own right, who took the photos of the USS Alaska coming home (the ones that weren't taken from the boat). Also, I THINK but am not sure that John Biggs took the Mesa Falls photo. It could have been me, but we both were getting some great pics that day. John, if it's your photo, let me know and I'll give you credit.
