Upgrade 9.1-->9.2
OK I've got the disks for mandrake 9.2
and I want upgrade my system which is currently 9.1. I am very
impressed with 9.1, I really thought the installation was easy and
infact I've installed it on several friends computers. This leads me to
have big expectations for 9.2, I have already seen the new gnome 2.4
and I'll be very happy have installed on my system. 9.2 also has a
newer kernel version which might mean a performance boost.
Here's a blow by blow account of the upgrade proceedure.
- Insert the 1st cd (there are 3) into the reader and
reboot...
- The install program asks which language you want to use.
- You are then asked to read and accept the licence agreement
- You need to choose your mouse type
- graphical test of the mouse buttons
- The installer asks you if this is an install or an upgrade, I
choose to upgrade
- The installer asks you to choose a keyboard type, youhave to
press the 'more' button to select an Italian keyboard like mine
- The installer detects all the packages that you have installed
and starts updating the ones it has new versions of
Grumbles so far:
Why didn't the program ask if want to insall any other programs?
The
time to install indicator doesn't work.
- When the installer has finished
installing the programs he
automatically tries to install the bootloader with the same parameters
as the old system. In my case this failed because lilo.conf contained
entries for other Liux systems on the hard disk. These partitions need
to be mounted for lilo to work. In the next page which is the boot
loader config page I just deleated these entries and continued.
After lilo is configured the
program went to a
configuration overvoew page. I noticed that the location was not set
corrrectly. It set the location to America (probably based on the
language). I change it to Italy and the program requested my disk back
in order to itstall 1 extra package.
In the next page I declined to install any updates over the
network
Reboot the system as per instruction and notice straight awy that
the lilo graphic have been changed.
During the boot of Linux I noticed that there is an
option(choosen by default to cover up the boot sequence.
When the system comes up there is a great big '9.2' in the
botttom right hand corner of my bash shell, this must be a sign of
progress.
When I have a look around the system I can see straight awaythat
most of kde has been broken and kmail has been removed completely. My
ip-up file has been interfeared with, bizzarre?
Most other things are fine, Gome looks great as expected. I am
very curious as to what happened to kde and ip-up,and I really
hope I don't find anything else broken.
