The G.U.F.O. (Universitary Group for Wildlife and Ornithology) is a university association born in 1988 from a group of students of the Università degli Studi della Tuscia of Viterbo. The principal activities completed and underway are:
the "Adorno Project" which is developed every year from the end of April to the end of May in Calabria, where a protection camp for the study of migratory birds of prey is organized on the Messina Strait;
the "Albanelle Project", which is developed from May to July to find and save the nests that the Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus) builds in the fields of grain;
the organization of bird-watching courses and trips to the principal Italian oases and reserves;
The GUFO has also participated in the Atlante Project of the nesting birds in the city of Viterbo. It has done a study on the migration and wintering of the "sands birds" at the salt-pans of Tarquinia. It has done two photography exhibitions entitled "Environments in the Viterbo area" (1993) and "Birds of prey on the Strait, migration and poaching" (1999). It has written the book "Fauna vertebrata terrestre della provincia di Viterbo" (Terrestrial vertebrate fauna of the Viterbo area) published by the provincial administration.
