News in 2003

January 22, 2003: Ennio Cascetta, Responsible for Tranports at Regione Campania, has presented the "Regional Metro Program for mobility and development in Campania". Among other things, scheduling has been announced for opening of sections and stations of Naples Metro (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

February 23, 2003: European Union allows Regione Campania further fundings for regional metro system (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

March 1, 2003: new direct line Casalnuovo - Naples of Circumvesuviana opens: three new stations (Centro Direzionale, Poggioreale and Botteghelle), and an important step forward toward realization of both Campania Region Metro and Naples Metro (Linea 3) (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

April 8, 2003: opening of station Materdei (Linea 1) announced to take place on July 4 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

April 16, 2003: on July 4 tunnel connecting station Museo (Linea 1) and exit leading to Museo Archeologico enters service: 100-metre long tapis roulants leading directly to Museum ticket booths (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

April 16, 2003: a "mini-metro" underground shuttle service between station Montedonzelli (Linea 1) and Via Domenico Fontana - Via Bernardo Cavallino area has been announced, and another is under consideration to connect Cardarelli Hospital entrance to station Colli Aminei (Linea 1) (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

May 5, 2003: kiosk designed to decorate Materdei station (Linea 1) torn down (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

May 8, 2003: station Monte Sant'Angelo (Linea 7) will be arranged by Anish Kapoor, worldwide known artist from India (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

May 19, 2003: opening of Aversa - Piscinola section of new Alifana line (11 kms, 5 stations, connection with Linea 1) announced to take place by end 2005 (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

May 30, 2003: Linea6 works stopped: new fundings from Regione Campania are not available yet. Vice-Mayor Rocco Papa announces no economical problems exist and works are going to continue without any delay (see press release - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

June 5, 2003: today Linea6 works start again (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

June 17, 2003: tunnel connecting station Museo (Linea 1) with box office inside Archaeological Museum announced to open in October 2003 (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

June 28, 2003: officially announced for July 5 opening of station Materdei (Linea 1) (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

July 2, 2003: starting from September 1, the number of units composing Linea 1 trains will be increased from two to three cars, so as to carry up to 1,290 passengers (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino)

July 3, 2003: Rocco Papa, Naples vice-Mayor, announces the tenth metro line to connect Piazza Cavour/Museo to Capodichino. Project financing is under consideration to carry out line construction. Scheduled end of works is 2011.

September 16, 2003: SEPSA Montesanto station (Linea 5 and Linea 7) will undergo restyling: works start at the end of September 2003 and should end in 2005 for a total cost of 40 million euros. A tunnel is being considered to connect this station with FS Montesanto station (Linea 2) (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

September 18, 2003: starting on Monday September 22nd, Linea 1 trains in the time band from 6 to 9,30 will be composed by one more unit, for a total train capacity of 1290 passengers (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

October 6, 2003: pedestrian tunnel connecting station Museo (Linea 1 and Linea 2) with National Archaeological Museum opens in Mid-November (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).

October 6, 2003: Metro information point opens in Mid-October at Piazza Municipio (see news - in Italian - from Il Mattino).
