Naples (in Italian Napoli, in Neapolitan Napule) is the most important city in Southern Italy, with more than 1,020,000 inhabitants (see ISTAT 1999 statistics), and is the Capital city of Regione Campania. The "Provincia di Napoli" has more than 3,110,000 inhabitants (see ISTAT 1999 statistics).
It is a hilly city with steep slopes, resulting in difficult development of an efficient metro system.
The "Piano Comunale dei Trasporti di Napoli" (Naples City Transport Plan) was developed in 1997 at Comune di Napoli, and works started as soon as they were funded.
Plan was improved and presented on Friday Jan 5 2001, together with information about Naples Metro System, achieved funding and state of the art.
In July 2003 plan was updated by adding one more line.
Some official information can be found at this link on Comune di Napoli site.
Metro System will consist of ten lines, as you can see in the below map:

MetroCampania
On June 16, 2002 the first timetable for Regione Campania railways services entered in use. MetroCampania aims at the coordination, under the guide of Regione Campania, in one system and with synchronized timetables, for the five societies which manage rail services in Campania: Alifana/Benevento-Napoli, Circumvesuviana, Metronapoli, Sepsa, Trenitalia.
Apart from acquiring new trains, total fare integration has been carried out. This was preceded by "Unico Campania", the ticket allowing, with savings in costs, the combined use of several public means of transport in about 160 cities and towns in Regione Campania. All this constitutes an important step towards the project of MetroCampania regional metro service: by 2010, after a financial effort of around 3.886 billion euros, the whole network will have an extension of 1400 kilometres with 423 stations, 28 interchange parking lots and 21 train-bus interchange nodes.
Much work has been done, while other is under development both in Naples area and in the other four provinces making up Regione Campania: a metro line connecting Salerno and Pontecagnano, metro services at Caserta and Benevento. A new path is planned for Cancello - Benevento (via Valle Caudina) line and so is an urban tram system at Avellino.
