One of the most widely read books set in the years of the Second World War is a diary, written by a Jewish girl. This author is remembered in The Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam

Anne Frank was thirteen when she began keeping a secret diary. Born in 1929 in Frankfurt, Anne and her family moved to Amsterdam in 1933 as a result of Hitler's racial discriminations.
After the occupation of Holland, Otto Frank decided to seek a safe place for his family and a few friends. He chooses a "secret annexe" in the building where he had his office. For two years eight people lived in claustrophobic confinement. Anne described the friction of communal living, as well as her dreams and aspirations in her diary, which took on the role of friend and confidant. On 4th August 1944 the Gestapo discovered their hiding place. Otto Frank and his wife were sent to Auschwitz, Anne and her sister to Bergen-Belsen. Anne died of typhoid and was buried in a mass grave.
Only Anne's father and her diary survived.
