The Kennedy family played an important role in US politics with three sons in prominent positions: John, Robert and Ted.
The founder of the dynasty, Joseph P. Kennedy, was a selfmade milionaire and ambassador to Britain from 1937to 1940. He had 9 children, including John Fitzgerald, who became the 35th President of the United States.
John F. Kennedy was the 1st Roman Catholic president. Harvard-educated, JFK served in the navy. In 1946 he began his career in politics. He married Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953 and had Caroline and John Jr. He was elected as president in 1960.
He faced many crises during his administration. The Cuba crisis arose in 1962 and the president blockaded the island. The building of the Berlin Wall was another problem for Kennedy.
The "cold war" culminated in the signing of the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty.
He defended civil rights for blacks.
The world was shocked when JFK was assassinated on 22nd November 1963.

Robert Kenndy met the same fate when he was shot during his campaign for the nomination as president.

JFK Jr., or John-John, died in 1999, together with his wife, in a flying accident.
