Mohamdas Karmachand Gandhi was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against British rule and was considered the father of his country. He's esteemed for his doctrine of non-violence.
His title Mahatma reflects his spiritual reputation.
He began law studies in England and he met social idealists.
He went to South Africa in search of clerical work and was shocked of racial discrimination. He became an advocate and undertook a series of campaigns that led to frequent imprisonment. He entered politics in India in 1919 to protest against British laws. He became non-cooperation policy to achieve Indian independence.
In August 1947 he negotiated for an autonomous Indian State, but was saddened by the violence between Muslims and Hindus.
In January 1948 he was sot, and killed, by a Hindu fanatic.
