Dark Side "Classic Albums" documentary is being released on DVD and VHS Video in Europe on 25th August

_________

PINK FLOYD '66-'67 DVD: Peter Whitehead's Pink Floyd London '66-'67 on DVD, will be released on 17th September.

MAGRITTE DVD/WATERS SOUNDTRACK: The video of "Portrait of an Artist, Volume 11: Rene Magritte" which features some incidental music by Roger Waters has also been released on DVD, in the US, with the title "Monsieur Rene Magritte". The film itself was made by Adrian Maben - the same chap behind the Live At Pompeii film and forthcoming DVD. The DVD features no extra materials from the VHS Video apart from the improved picture and sound quality that DVD offers.

PF WIN MICROSOFT AWARD: Microsoft held the Second Annual Windows Media Innovation Awards, at their Redmond, Washington head offices. Amongst the awards given out, were Honorable Mention awards to Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd, for their "creation of the Web's first 5.1 surround sound digital music releases using Windows Media Audio 9 Professional (WMA Pro), allowing fans to immerse themselves in full surround sound for home-theater-like experiences on their Windows Powered PCs". Peter Gabriel made his latest album, "Up," available to consumers for digital download in both 5.1 surround sound using WMA Pro and in stereo. Before fans purchased the album, they had the opportunity to preview it in its entirety by downloading it from the Web. Pink Floyd released a promotional download of "Money" from the re-released SACD version of the album "Dark Side of the Moon" using WMA Pro.

PRETTY THINGS/GILMOUR DVD: The release of the Pretty Things' SF Sorrow Live At Abbey Road DVD, which features David Gilmour on guitar, is a little confused at present, though it seems that the European ("Region 2") version is being released on 30th June, and the US/Canadian ("Region 1") version comes later in the year, on December 2nd.

DAVID GILMOUR - QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY HONOUR: it has been officially announced that David Gilmour had received the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) award, for his services to music, in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
This was one of a handful of such rewards made to musicians to reward longevity in their industry - his charity work is yet to be officially recognised by the Queen; an OBE or knighthood next year perhaps?

NEW "WALL" BOOK: Vernon Fitch, Floyd author and creator of the Pink Floyd Archives, is publishing a new book on "The Wall". Subtitled "Inside the music, the movie and the stage shows", it is being published by Reynolds and Hearn on 30th September 2003. Illustrated with 150 colour photos and unique, never-before-seen artwork by Gerald Scarfe, the project has had full co-operation from the band themselves. Brain Damage have assisted in our own small way, supplying Vernon with copies of information from the recording studio records from the time. Knowing Vernon's eye for detail and accuracy, and the help from the band and Gerald Scarfe, this book should be a real cracker!

SYD PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: The fantastically-named art gallery Zoltar the Magnificent of Marshal Street, London is presenting the first ever exhibition of photographer Mick Rock's portraits of Syd Barrett.
The photographs of Syd taken between 1969 and 1972 capture the man after his departure from Pink Floyd and "embody the spirit of London long past but not forgotten. Syd Barrett and friend, the photographer Mick Rock, were doubtless ahead of their times and beyond their years." (from announcement) These photographs can also be seen in the book published by Genesis, "Psychedelic Renegades" which we have had a close look at in our reviews section.
This Summer Mick travels to Japan for a major retrospective of his work showing at the Tokyo Museum of modern Photography which will go on to tour Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong. He then returns to the UK for a series of academic lectures including a forthcoming exhibition of his material at the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London. The exhibition opens on June 6th everyday from 10am to 6pm. It is closed on Sundays.

DAVID GILMOUR HELPS HOMELESS CHARITY: David Gilmour is giving £3.6million of his own money to build low-cost homes for 400 people in London. The homes will be for low-income public sector workers and homeless people. Other facilities for the previously homeless will include education centres and drugs counselling. Gilmour has been named as vice president of the homeless charity Crisis today. Plans were also announced to raise £10million for homeless projects.

David said he was inspired by a similar community project developed in New York, called Common Ground in New York, where 300 homeless people and 300 low income people live. "Homeless people end up living on the fringes of our society and it’s time we found a way to bring them back into its heart. I’ve seen what has been achieved in New York and am passionately behind this project which is about providing not just a roof but a new way of life where all the residents can thrive and make their contribution" he said in a statement.

"David Gilmour’s generosity has provided a real launch pad for this project and we are immensely grateful for the belief he’s shown. We’re now looking for others to get involved in creating this community whether their input is to find us a site or run a franchised business. Together we can show a new approach to both homelessness and city living," said Shaks Ghosh, Crisis Chief Executive. Read Dave's interview here

Thanks to John I've got copies of both Uncut Magazine and Record Collector. On the first one you can find 27 pages with Waters, Gilmour, Mason and Wright on "Dark Side of the Moon, the ultimate stoner classic", plus a lot of unseen pictures. They reveal all about the making of each song....And they're still arguing about who did what!!! On RC you'll find an interview with Dave who talks about his career within and out of the Floyds. Also here, tons of unseen pics. But on this issue of RC you'll find also reviews of the 40 greatest brit-psych albums (of course also "The Piper..." and "A Saucerful...") and an audio cd with 18 mind blowing tracks (feat. Syd!!!). ...and also a short but cool review of the Friday 12th May, 1967 GAMES FOR MAY live event.

Well, about this site, I've added new shows to my RoIOs list and updated the links page...please, if you have new links you think should appear on it, let me know.

A new DVD of the BBC "Classic Album" programme feat. Dark Side 30th Anniversary will be realised on 30th June for the UK and Europe :-)

1. PINK FLOYD ON BBC: The BBC's long running show, Top Of The Pops, features Floyd in their TOTP2 show, on BBC2 TV, on 22nd April at 18:20hrs (17:20hrs GMT). Details should soon be on the BBC TOTP2 website.

2. DSOTM DOCUMENTARY DVD: A new documentary on the album "Dark Side Of The Moon" is nearing completion and will be released on DVD on June 30th. Details of what it includes are still quite sketchy, but it is believed that there is live footage from 1972 and 1973. There is credence behind these inclusions, as the DSOTM EPK (found here on this site!) includes David Gilmour playing some of "On The Run" from Brighton in 1972. They played three shows at the Brighton Dome in that year, including 20th January, which was the first public performance (if curtailed due to technical issues) of Dark Side. More info on this title as we have it.

3. WALL LIVE IN BERLIN 1990 SACD!: To tie in with the forthcoming DVD, where Roger Waters supervised a new 5.1 surround sound mix, there is a new, non-hybrid SACD of the soundtrack coming out as well, which is due to hit the stores on May 12th. Non-hybrid SACDs cannot be played on conventional CD players, unfortunately. More info on this title as we have it.

4. POMPEII DVD DATE CHANGE: We've just heard that the release date for the DVD of Live At Pompeii has been fixed at 6th June, for Region 2 (UK/Europe). The date for other regions should be the same or adjacent. (from Brian Damage)
