Sistine Chapel, Raphael's rooms and S. Peter Basilica,
Tour for uninformed tourists

Deservedly one of the most famous places in the world, the Sistine Chapel is the site where the conclave for the election of the popes and other solemn pontifical ceremonies are held.
The barrel-vaulted ceiling is entirely covered by the famous frescoes which Michelangelo painted between 1508 and 1512 for Julius II. More than twenty years later, Michelangelo was summoned back by Paul III to paint the Last Judgement on the wall behind the altar.
The four rooms commonly known as the "Rooms of Raphael" were part of the new residence chosen by Julius II, who commissioned Raphael to decorate the whole of this part of the Vatican.

A fascinating walk in S. Eustachio quarter where it is possible to discover some strange and mysterious histories of ancient Rome with an evocative atmosphere. Discovering the legends, mots and roman sayings, related to the places sorrounding Piazza Navona, Pantheon and Trevi Fountain.

Ancient Ostia and the Borgo Castle

Ostia is the ancient harbour of Rome which, according to the tradition, was founded by the king Anco Marzio who gave it its first rudimental urbanistic structure. It has preserved its classical configuration which it owes to important works commissioned by Augustus and emperor Adrian. Walking along the decumanus maximus, you can see the Neptune baths, the firemen's barracks, the theatre, the Termopholium or the "insulae" (apartment buildings).
Then a walk next door to the fairytale castle, built in 1483 by Giuliano della Rovere, who later became Pope Julius II. As so often happened in papal Rome, Julius built his fortress using bricks pilfered from Ostia Antica, and lime obtained by burning the ancient city marble.

Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este (Tivoli)

Tivoli is the site of an imposing architectural complex dating to Hadrian's time. The series of palaces, baths, theatres, etc. were meant to remind him, here in Italy, of the places he most loved in Greece and the Near East.
The monuments include the Stoà Poikile (commonly called Pecile) and the Naval Theater, the Small Thermae and the Great Thermae, the Canopus.
Villa d'Este: on the ruins of a former Benedectine convent, the cardinal Ippolito of Este, Lucrezia Borgia's son, built his summer palazzo, relying on the plan of Pirro Ligorio (beginning of the XVI century). Villa d'Este is famous for its beautiful gardens and the avenue of the Hundred Fountains.
