DATES OF THE CONFLICT: 1956 - Beginning of the Angolan indipendence war against Portugal colonists

1975 - Indipendence of Angola

1976 - The UN recognize the Republic of Angola

1979 - Edoardo Dos Santos is named president of Angola. First invasion by South African troops and first militar Cuban expedition of 15000 soldiers

1981 - Second S. African invasion and second Cuban militar forwarding

1989 - Angola, South Africa and Cuba sign a peace treaty

1991 - First cease fire

1992 - UN-monitored democratic multy-party elections and victory of the MPLA. New war

1994 - UN peacekeeping expedition and second cease fire. UNITA's leader Jonas Savimbi, agrees to enter the government

1997 - End of the negotiations and new warfare. UN retreat

VICTIMS: Since 1975, more than 1,000,000 of victims. In the last 3 years hundreds of thousand deads and 1 million, in a population of 10 millions, displaced. Every day 200 people die for starvation*. While 2 millions Angolans live in need or dependent on aid, only 600,000 are actually receveing aid. Of the 2 millions, 1.7 are displaced persons. 3 others millions Angolans are entirely inaccessible and their condition is therefore impossible to assess.**. 3 out of every 10 Angolan children will not survive to their fifth birthday. In 8 months of siege, the only city of Malange has left 1,000 people, killed by UNITA's shelling, and 10-15 people have died each day for starvation***.
