 C'è stato un crescente sviluppo a livello dell'interfaccia tra neuroscienze e psicoanalisi. Come mostrano gli impressionanti contributi in questo libro e molti altri in questi ultimi tempi, non c'è alcun dubbio che il tentativo iniziale di Freud di legare psiche e cervello nel suo manoscritto, inizialmente non pubblicato, del 1893 sta ora ricomparendo in superficie e sta diventando vitale. C'è una crescente percezione che il dualismo tra mente e cervello necessiti di un superamento al fine di avere una comprensione della mente e dei vari suoi caratteri allo stesso modo in cui comprendiamo il cervello, solo però a condizione che consideriamo alcuni caratteri mentali, compresi i meccanismi psicodinamici. Tutto questo prepara ad un eccellente dialogo tra neuroscienze e psicoanalisi.

Mentre c'è molto dialogo e un fruttuoso scambio tra neuroscienze e psicoanalisi, la cornice metodologica per una tale convergenza resta meno chiara. Uno dei maggiori ostacoli a creare legami tra cervello e psiche venne già visto da Freud ai suoi tempi come l'incapacità di localizzare i meccanismi psicodinamici in specifiche regioni o reti del cervello. Concetti psicodinamici come Io, meccanismi di difesa, memoria, inconscio, eccetera si riferiscono a certi meccanismi che sono letteralmente dinamici per la loro stessa natura. Ciò contrasta con la loro localizzazione in specifiche regioni o reti del cervello che sono per definizione ben definite e quindi statiche anziché dinamiche. Ciò significa una discrepanza tra meccanismi (psicodinamici) e regione (neuronale), cosa che metodologicamente può essere descritta come approccio basato su regioni contro  approccio basato su meccanismi.

Come possiamo definire i concetti di questi due approcci? Un approccio basato su regioni ha lo scopo di associare un particolare meccanismo psicodinamico (come la rimozione o l'Io) con l'attività neuronale in una particolare regione (come il cingolato subgenuale nellla rimozione)  o rete (come il DMN - "Default-Mode Network"). Ciò viene ben descritto ad esempio nell'importante contributo di Carhart-Harris et al. (2008) ed anche nel capitolo del libro "Neuroscienze e psicoanalisi" (Edizioni Frenis Zero, in fase di pubblicazione) scritto da Schore. A tale approccio basato su regioni può essere contrapposto uno basato su meccanismi che si concentri di più sul legame dei meccanismi psicodinamici con particolari meccanismi neuronali come ad esempio nel libro "Neuroscienze e Psicoanalisi" viene descritto nel caso delle differenti memorie nel capitolo di Walker e Stickgold. In questo caso il meccanismo psicodinamico in questione non è collegato ad una regione o ad una rete del cervello, ma ad un particolare meccanismo neuronale come è stato da me discusso estensivamente con speciale riferimento ai meccanismi di difesa (Northoff, 2011).

Gli approcci basati su regioni e quelli basati su meccanismi sono opposti e escludentesi a vicenda? No, essi devono essere considerati piuttosto come complementari e come gli estremi di un continuum. Idealmente, si potrebbero combinare tra loro. Il concetto di M. Solms di localizzazione dinamica, che si basa sugli studi dello psicologo russo Luria, ha aperto un iniziale ponte concettuale tra entrambi gli approcci e, più in generale, tra il tentativo fallito di Freud e i nostri tempi coi suoi strumenti migliori per visualizzare l'attività neuronale nel cervello. Come possiamo realmente mettere in pratica piuttosto che semplicemente ipotizzare una tale combinazione di approcci basati su regioni e quelli basati su meccanismi? Per far ciò possiamo andare brevemente indietro nella storia delle neuroscienze e addentrarci nel dibattito tra localizzazionismo e olismo.
