Wilhelm
Sasnal
(Tarnow, Poland, 1972)
Sasnal
uses painting, films, photography and installations to depict his
country and his ideas on life.
The
visual aspect of Sasnal’s work is essential, but does not stand
alone: sound, movement, speed and action are all part and parcel of
his projects. This is not only reflected in his choice of inspiration
sources (personal photographs, film stills), but is also given by his
work as a film and video producer and comic book writer.
This
makes painting just one of the many possible artistic media for Sasnal,
which he uses to transform certain elements into images. His subjects
come across as isolated, in a state of suspension, waiting for
something as if interrupted. His language is what it appears to be:
raw and unsettling. Slowly, all traditional rules of interpretation
wane away in the face of reality. Shown in all its bitterness, it is
this reality that reveals Sasnal’s true strength.
Sasnal’s
work shows us a type of reality that unconditionally demands a
reaction.
