adel abdessemed

19.09.2003-22.10.2003

Adel Abdessemed was born in Costantine in Algeria in 1971, he first lived in France then moved to New York and presently lives in Berlin.

Nuit” is the title of the work produced especially for Laura Pecci.

On the roof of one of the rooms, a  metal ceiling with gun-shot bullet holes gives the impression of a “starry” sky. The bullets give an idea of a violent scene, and there is an extraordinary visual impact. Without being theatrical, it evokes violence in a very direct way and reminds one of the terror that every war brings.

Adel Abdessemed often uses videos, actions, performances, installations, photographs, paintings and drawings to interpret the drama and problems that are often hidden by the etiquette of cultural, political and spiritual identities. The themes of his work concentrate on integration, racism, sexuality and the overcoming of certain taboos that religion imposes, especially in the case of Muslims

Even though the works of Abdessemed represent a form of political intent, of resistance to limitations, they are also poetic images, suggestive and intense view of reality which create an immense tension between the beauty of the image and the violence of the idea that they provoke
