Apricena dates back to VIII century, although its traces date back to 1157.
It seems that there is a connection between its name and a Frederick II's
dinner. Apricena has always been famous for its marbles and its stone.
Frederick II used its marble for some parts of his Castel del Monte. Over
the centuries Apricena has been dominated by several famillies: Attendolis,
Gonzaga, Del Sangro, Carafa, Lombardi, Brancia and Cattaneo. Aviolent
earthquake damaged the little town in 1627. There are important
buildings: Palazzo Baronale (1658), Frederick's Castle. |
