The name would come from "Ischio", a kind of oak-tree. The village is
divided in two district: the medieval one (Terra Vecchia), one of the most
beautiful over the whole Gargano, and the 1700's one (Il Ponte). Remains of
the ancient "entrances" are: Porta Grande, Porta del Ponte and Portella or
Porta di Ponente. There are also remains of its ancient walls. There are
nice ancient buildings, the '600's castle, the church and the monastery of
S. Francesco (a stoned pine tree is in front of the church, germinated after
the S. Francesco's stick), the ancient church of S. Maria Maggiore, the
church of S. Eustachio (1715) and the church of Purgatiorio (1678). P.
Giannone, very well known historian and GIURISTA, was born
here.
