The isles of Tremiti (once called Insulae Diomedae because of the legend of
diomede) have been Marine Park since 1989. They are called Tremiti because
of the frequent earthquakes actually recorded in to the sea. The ARCIPELAGO
is made of 5 islands: S. Nicola, S. domino, Capraia, Cretaccio and La
Vecchia. Diomede came here after the war of Troia. The DIOMEDEE belong to
the family of BERTE: they are strange birds and nightime produce a
misterious sound, just like a lament. This lament would be the Diomede's
warriors lament. In S. Nicola there is the ancient fortress (late medieval
age) with the nice wooden roofed church, a painted crucifix (XIII century)
and a 300's little statues of the MADONNA and the BAMBINO. Huge is the
monastery with two beautiful Renaissance cloisters.
