Along the banks of Lake Lesina they have found remains of huts and stoned
tools dated back to bronze and iron age. The town dates back to VI
century. The name would come from the so called island on the DALMATA coast; or from
fishermen coming from there. Nearby one fo the channel s that go to ghe sea (Marina di Lesina), you can
see the so called "Pietre Nere": these are volcanic rocks dated back to
TRIASSICO. All along the lake there are fishermen repairing their nets and
the typical boats called "Sandalo". The water has a salty taste: it comes
from an extinguished volcano and three channels connected to the sea. The
lake together with its territory got into Lesina county in 780 a. C.: it was
one of the LONGOBARDO prince Arechi's 34 counties which divided the DUCATO
of Benevento. Favourable geographical position and economic
"well-being" (PESCA) got monks of Cassino interested in the area. There was a gastronomic
reason as well: the eels of the lagoon were very important for the
CENOBITICA diet. Therefore at once they built a monastery and two abbeys.
Sign of religion are the church of San Primiano, the abbey of S. Maria di
Ripalta within the so called "wood-island". This is a 18 Km slice of ground
on a sandy background with a great variety of plants.
