In 1550, this holy place got the privilege of PLENARIA INDULGENZA andthe 5th
March 1997 the Pope gave it the PLENARIA INDULGENZA in
Perpetuum. Once the
mountain where Monte S. Angelo is, was called Drion
(Oak). Sights are various: Manfredonia and Mattinata's sea and landscapes leading to Foresta
Umbra. The town was built around the Sanctuary. In front of the Sanctuary
there are the remains of S. Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore churches as well
as the Tomb of Rotari. The church of S. Pietro dates back to VIII-IX century
and its only remains are the 600's facade, the rose window and the apse's
structure. Beside it, there is the church of S. Maria Maggiore with its
gorgeous facade. The Tomb of Rotari is a monument and dates back to XII
century. They say that it would have been built as a BATTISTERO, bell tower or
sepulchre. Within the "Tomb" there is a LOCULO, but it is a very unlikely Rotari's
grave (king of Longobardi, famous for the EDITTO). Lovely the BATTESIMALE
CONCA and the sculptures of Jesus being arrested. The huge castle is
vertically on the valley. It was first built on IX century and extended
afterwards by ANGIOINI and ARAGONESI. Frederick II embellished it. Carlo II
di Durazzo, king of Neaples and Hungary was born there and the Lord of Onore
di Monte S. Angelo used to live in. Within the monastery of S. Francesco
there is the "G. Tancredi" ETNOGRAFICO
museum, one of the most important within southern
Italy. Evocative is the medieval district of
"Junno": the "A SCHIERA" white houses show how the builders respect the PROFILO of the
mountain.
