Peschici
is on the northern side of Gargano and lies on the cliff
upon the sea. They say that Euripolo, commander of Schiavoni,
a slav population, founded Peschici in 970; he was tehre
to get rid the coast of Saracens. In fact, its name is
slav and means "pure sand". There is a well
kept historic centre. The old medieval houses were built
around the ancient XIII century's castle which is a monumental
good of the region, together with the Tower of Bridge.
In the hisotric centre there are the churches of S. Elia
and S. Maria
del Suffragio. 1 Km. far from the town, there is the famous
church of S. Maria delle Grazie, ex abbey of Colena (XI
century); this is one of the most important monument of
Gargano. It is actually made of two churches: the biggest
one is a apse and has got a "sailed" bell tower.
The other
structures are on the northern side of the complex. The
church is open each year on the 8th September.
Very nice bays alternate with fascinating caves and higer,
on the coast, there are several watchtowers.
