Officially
it was born on 1095. S. Marco de Lama
was belonging to the monastery of S. Matteo.
In 1537 the inhabitants were given rights
of citizen. S. Marco became town in 1793,
for a royal act. On the lower slopes of
Monte Celano, there is Borgo Celano. On
the Good Friday there is a typical "exhibition":
the inhabitants drag the so called "fracchie".
They are big cone wooden bonfire. A must:
the church Matrice and the Cave of Montenero
(ca. 100 m. deep). In between S. Marco
and Sannicandro G.go there is the most
famous Karst formation phenomena, Dolina
Pozzatina, a sort of natural
amphitheatre.
