Vico
is in the inner northside of Gargano.
From here you can see the Foresta Umbra
and the blue sea. there are several elements
that make Vico beautiful: history, religion,
wildlife and art. There is plenty of prehistoric
remains, such as necropolis of Monte Tabor.
Within its medieval centre there is a
castle built by Frederick II. Within the
Mother Curch of S. Maria del Suffragio
there is the S. Valentine's golden statue
made of wood: he is
Vico's "protector". Since 14th
February 1618 hte inhabitants have been
celebrating S. Valentine, protector of
citrus fruits growers, they cover his
relics
with oranges and lemons and get them in
procession. There are little streets and
districts with romantic names: "Water
of Lover", "Well of broken heart".
All along the ancient walls there are
little churches, crosses. Northside there
is the ancient monastery of Cappuccini
with its famous huge ilex (17 m. high
and 5 m. wide): they say that it was planted
by friar Nicola da Vico
in 1600. Within the monastery there is
a miraculous crucefix.
