Gastronomy

As I have already said, Bologna is the city in Italy where you eat best.....(unfortunately for the figure! ..sigh :P)

We have specialties that have existed for centuries and are of many different kinds: pasta, cold meats, sweets, cheese and wines. I'm going to list only the most famous and the ones you really can't afford to miss if you happen to be here.

PASTA:

Tortellini are definitely the best. It's a kind of egg-pasta filled with parma ham, mortadella, pork and spices, and the legend says their shape comes from Venus' navel. Well...look at them and decide it yourself!
The most typical ones are eaten with broth, but they are also great with bolognaise sauce (ragù) or cream...well, actually...they are good with everything!

Lasagne is also among my favorites. Bologna's typical lasagne is green and made of several  rectangular layers of egg-pasta, with ragù and a white sauce we call besciamella between the various layers. They need a very long preparation , but it's worth it!

Tagliatelle are another kind of egg-pasta, cut in thin stripes. They are also very typical with ragù, but actually you can have them with everything, from meat to fish, to vegetables, ecc..

COLD MEATS:

Mortadella is the most typical from Bologna, in fact Bologna is also a synonym of this product, as it is called in some parts of Italy and abroad too. Man, this is really fat!! But, believe me, absolutely tasteful!

Prosciutto crudo. This is known abroad as Parma ham, because the most famous one comes from a city in my region called Parma. In fact it is not really typical of my city, but it's very close. Parma's one is particularly known for its sweet taste and its pink color. This is absolutely my favorite kind of cold meats!! I would eat just prosciutto crudo for ever!!! I love it! This is what I miss more when I'm abroad... :P

Salame. There are many kinds of them coming from different parts of Italy, really...if I had to list them all I think I won't have enough space! Anyway The one in the picture is from Piacenza, another city in my region. This is at least as fat as mortadella, but it's not my fault if the best food is always the most fattening!...:sigh :( !

SWEETS:

Panspeziale. I'm not particularly fond of sweets, but this is, I would say, the most common here in Bologna and it's usually eaten at Christmas.
This is called Panspeziale or Certosino: honestly, I hate it, because I don't like candied fruit, and this is completely made of it!

CHEESE:

Parmigiano. You probably know Parmesan cheese. The real name is  Parmigiano Reggiano; it's also typical from my region and it's the kind of cheese we usually grate on pasta. It's one of the most renowned, and also quite expensive :P

WINES:

As you know, Italy is famous for wines, and in my region, Emilia Romagna, we have plenty of them. I'd like to mention two among the most renowned here, and my favorites too. They are: Albana di Romagna and Sangiovese di Romagna. Albana is a white wine and the taste is described as: dry, hot, harmonic and slightly tannic (I don't know what that means!). It's good with fish.  Sangiovese is a red wine , and I love it more than all the others. The taste is described as: full, dry and harmonic. It is good with meat.

PIADINA ROMAGNOLA

Piadina is a delicious specialty from my region, especially from the cities by the sea. This is made of flour, lard, brewer's yeast, eggs and salt. We eat it hot with any kind of cold meats. Believe me, it's great!

And now just a little "family" picture :-)
