The
European Basketball Championships were founded
in 1935. In the first editions there were also
Asiatic and North African teams like Syria and
Egypt, while now the only team of the Middle
East is Israel.
The East European teams have always dominated
the Championship: USSR (led by The Colonel
Gomelsky) and Yugoslavia won many editions.
Only in the last years the West Europe is
becoming important thanks to the victories of
Italy, Greece and Germany; but the difference
between East and West still remains today.
