GAMES – CYCLISME TOUR DE FRANCE

www.letour.fr

The “Tour de France”  was born in 1903, thanks to the magazine Auto’s editor. In the first edition 60 cyclists join the race, but only 20 completed it. The competitors have to cover 1500 km, divided in 6 stages.
Since 1903 the race take place each year, except during the two World Wars. The routes, the deeds, the toil and the protagonists make the Tour a sort of legend. In 1919, after the First World War, Henri Desgrange introduces the “Yellow T-shirt” for the winner.

                          LANCE ARMSTRONG

After the Second World War, Jaques Goddet becomes the manager of the Tour; in these years Bartali and Coppi won the competitions for the second time. After that Jacques Anquetil becomes the dominator, winning five editions. Like him only Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault e Miguel Indurain collect the same number of victories.
The commentators consider the Tour 1989, characterized by the challenge between Fignon-Lemond, the best one; on the contrary Italian people remember the Tour 1998 won by Pantani, the last edition before the Armstrong Era (99-00-01).

Even if this year will take place the 89th edition of the Tour, it always attracts many people, and it has became a symbol of France like The Marianne, The Tour Eiffel and The Baguette.
The importance of the Tour remains in spite of the doping scandals and the fixed races.
France is trying to maintain the integrity, the honesty, the transparency of the Tour to make the physical efforts and the victories of the champions true and credible.
