He began to play in US Saint-Henri club, near to La Castellane then passed to Septemes Sports Olympiques from under-11's till the age of fourteen. In 1986, he played in the first year junior selection for the league championship. At the end of the year, he was called in for three days at the CREPS (the sport regional centre) in Aix-en-Provence. That is where he was spotted. AS Cannes' recruiter, Jean Varraud, noticed him and talked about him to the training centre's director, Gilles Rampillon. 

 

Initially, he went to Cannes for one week but he stayed there six weeks. At that time, he realized that he could become a professional player. He was playing with professionals all day long. When he was sixteen, Jean Fernandez, Cannes' coach, made him play with professionals. In 1986, he played his first game in First Division against Nantes. He scored his first goal on February 8th, 1991. At the end of the season, the club was ranking fourth in the table and qualified for the UEFA Cup. In the following season Cannes relegated to Second Division. It was in Cannes that he met his wife Veronique.

 

After an average 91-92 season, Cannes was relegated to Second Division. At that time, he decided to make a step forward by moving to Bordeaux. Courbis asked me to sign a four-year contract  

On April 17, 1994, he played for the first time for the French National Team He scored the goals which made them draw. He played other four season in Bordeaux then he moved to Torino.

 

He was Italy Champion in 1997 and 1998 with Juventus and passed to Real Madrid in 2001.
