It is a picturesque
village, enclosed
with the romantic
town-walls built
in the 13C century
and fortified with
14 towers, mentioned
by Dante (Inferno,
XXXI, 40-44). The
village preserves
its medieval character
and the small church
in the main square
is a remarkable
example of transition
from the Romanesque
architecture to
the Gothic one.
In summertime the
inhabitants set
up a nice medieval
fair: for some days
Monteriggioni returns
to its medieval
life with its handicrafts,
traditional cooking
and folk shows.
