abbadia san salvatore
CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES

Abbey of San Salvatore
notes: The Abbey of San Salvatore is one of the oldest abbeys in Tuscany and it was an important station on the Francigena. According to tradition the church was founded by the Lombard king Ratchis in 743, on the place where he saw a vision. The church was rebuilt in the 11C and the 16C. For centuries it was very rich and powerful, then it was suppressed by Grand Duke Leopoldo I in 1782 and a new Benedictine community reinstalled in the monastery in 1939. A fortified gateway leads into the square, where the Abbey is: the façade is narrow and flanked by two bell-towers (the tower on the right is unfinished). The Latin-cross plan interior has an elevated choir with an access arch adorned by statues of saints and of the evangelists. The crypt is very important for it dates probably to 8C: it has a Greek-cross plan and numerous different columns with wonderful carved capitals. Near the church, there is the monastery with a 17C cloister and the entry at the Museum of the Abbey (july-august, 10: 00-12: 00 a.m. / 4: 00-7: 00 p.m., september-october on request tel. 0577.778083), which houses precious liturgical objects and reliquaries dating to Middle Ages..

hours: winter: 9:15-12:00 a.m. / 3:15-5:00 p.m.; summer: 9:15-12:00 a.m. / 3:15-5:45 p.m.
notes: Leaving Siena, drive on the Cassia road to Buonconvento, where you turn on the left following the brown signpost "Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore". In a thick wood of cypresses, the abbey is on a promontory and it is one of the best known monasteries in Tuscany. It was founded in 1313 by Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348) and was confirmed under Benedectine rule in 1319 by Guido Tarlati, bishop of Arezzo. The building of the monastery began in 1320,then it became very rich and powerful in 15C and 16C. Beneath a tower (1393) with two Della Robbian works of art is the entry to the monastery. From this gateway a road leads to the abbey through a wood of cypresses, where there are some small chapels and a 16C fish reservoir. The monastery is close to the church (1400-1417) and it has a great cloister, famous for its frescoes illustrating events from the life of St. Benedict by Luca Signorelli (1497-98) and by Sodoma (1505-1508), which are masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance painting. From the great cloister is a passage to the church with frescoes by Sodoma. The Latin-cross plan church was renovated in 18C. The magnificent wooden choir-stalls are by Giovanni da Verona (1503-1505), the lectern is by Raffaele da Brescia (1520), the cupola and the apse are painted by Jacopo Ligozzi (1547-1627). In the chapel of the Holy Sacrament (left transept) there is a large 13C crucifix. From the great cloister is a passage to another cloister, then to the refectory. A stair from this cloister leads to the wonderful library, which keeps more than 40.000 volumes, incunabula and illuminated manuscripts. At the end of the library there is the pharmacy with a fine collection of 17C jars. Hospitality ia available at the guest-quarters (tel. 0577/ 7070017).

CHURCHES AND MONASTERIES

Abbey of San Galgano
hours: 8:00-12:00 a.m. / 2:00 p.m.-till sunset
notes: It is one of the most unforgettable Tuscan monuments: to reach the Abbey drive on the road from Siena to Massa Marittima for 35 km, then follow the signs. The ruins of the Abbey are in an isolated position in the Sienese countryside. It was built in the same place where San Galgano Guidotti (1148-81) lived in hermitage (he was canonised in 1185) and it was the chief Cistercian house in Tuscany. Built in the 13C, the Abbey became very powerful, but the decline began already in the 16C. The vaulted roof and the bell-tower were ruined at the end of the 18C, then the Abbey was abandoned. The façade is unfinished and it has three doorways. The architectural structure of the sides and of the apse is very beautiful, with mullioned windows and round windows, whose stone ornaments are nowadays wasted. The church with nave and two aisles has grass as its floor and the sky as its ceiling: it is one of the most romantic sites in Tuscany. The nave is divided by sixteen cross-shaped pillars with the remains of Gothic arches. Near the church there are fragments of the cloister and the chapter house with a vaulted roof. On the hill Monte Siepi near the church, there is the chapel of San Galgano, the only Romanesque centrally planned church in the Sienese province. The interior has a cupola, built of concentric rings of bricks and travertine. The chapel keeps the sword traditionally thrust in the stone by San Galgano in the moment of his renunciation of the knightly life. On the left, there is a little chapel with frescoes and sinopie by Ambrogio Lorenzetti (1285-1348?). We suggest driving to Chiusdino for a short visit to the little town.
