Modulation


It is the process in which the basic radio signal, the carrier, is coded in some ways, in order to carry useful information (audio, video, digital data, etc.).

Main types of modulation are the following:

Amplitude Modulation, AM
Used by broadcasting, CB and aeronautics.
Frequency Modulation, FM
Used by broadcasting, TV audio, radio amateurs, CB, police, army, ships, cellular phones, etc.
Single Sideband, SSB
Used mainly by radio amateurs, army and ships.
Radio Telegraphy, CW
Used by radio amateurs, army and ships.
Frequency Shift Keying - FSK
Used by radio amateurs, ships, press agencies and many other services to send different kinds of digital data.
