Enrico Bacco

Storiografo

- Effigie di tutti i Re, che han dominato il Reame di Napoli da Ruggiero I Normanno in fino a noi, cavate da diverse pitture, marmi ecc. con brievi notizie delle vite di essi (Napoli 1602);
- Teatro della nobiltà d'Italia, con lo pseudonimo di Flaminio Rossi (1607);
- Delle grazie e miracoli della B. Vergine del Monte Carmelo (1605);
- Vita di S. Martino, vescovo di Tours e protettore di Martina
, che ebbe una ristampa nel 1737.

Historiographer

P. Marracci, in Biblioteca Mariana, book I page 551, maintains that Arrigo Bacco is not a Neapolitan but a German writer. On the other hand, in his Historical Memoirs of Vieste after the careful reading of the chapter Description of the town of Vesta (page 144), included in the work The Kingdom of Naples divided into twelve provinces, published in 1618 (pages 147-151), V. Giuliani asserts that Bacco is a citizen from Vieste.

In fact, at first Bacco relates, perhaps for the gulls, the legend gathered from Istoria Illirica by Francesco Sacro and from Supplement of the Chronicles by Jacovo Filippo Bergamasco, saying that Vieste was founded by Noah and named after Vesta (o Hesta), his wife. Then he shortly and seriously states that the origins of our town are very old and that its first name was Uria, related by the great Greek and Latin historians (Strabone, Erodoto, Plinio, Diodoro, Appiano Alessandrino, Dionisio and others). Today this theory is shared, maintained and confirmed by the greater scholars of Ancient History, both Italian and foreign.
Then he makes a historical survey on Vieste very simply but persuasively from the Roman rule till his time, he dwells upon the origins of the Diocese and exalts the raising to pope of bishop Ugo Buoncompagni, who became Pope Gregory XIII.
Thanks to Bacco we know the former name of the Cathedral devoted to St Mary Oreta and that, on the initiative of Frederic II, after the restoration in 1240, it was and is named Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo. We know, moreover, the names of the most notable families of the time: Marielli, Urbino, Fasano, Carlucci, Santoro, Prudenza, Papalano, Caputo, Gatta, Maroldo, Tontomonaco, Ianula, Pinto, Fano, Colapaulo, Protontino, Vaccillera, Induccilo e Cotugno.
He also touches upon the old ruins of Marino (now Merino) and St Mary’s feast, on 9th May, Pope Alexander III’s stay at Vieste when he sailed to Venice to sign the peace with Frederic Barbarossa, and Pope Celestine V when he tried to reach the coasts of Jugoslavia after his renunciation to Papacy.
Only a citizen from Vieste could speak of his town so ardently telling that "it has a very fertile land divided by Nature into plains and hills quite symmetrically, it is full of fruit trees, particularly so perfect olive-trees and vines that are competitive with the most praised ones. In summer in its woods manna is drawn out of the manna-ashes, which taken to Venice gives profits to its citizens".
"Its sea is full of fish and particularly the fishing of the sardines occurs in spring with hundreds of boats which fish a lot of them, salted and supplied to the whole province. Its air is very healthy: that is why the women are beautiful and charming"
.
Recalling the last slaughter of the barbarian hordes of which, perhaps, he was a terrified witness, he writes sorrowfully: "Lately in July 1554, not without the negligence of the province governors of that time, after being besieged by Draguth with seventy galleys of the army of the Great Turk (Solyman the Great) for seven days, as it was not able to withstand, it was sacked and burnt with the loss of seven thousand people including prisoners and dead". He had to escape with his family to Naples where he stayed permanently. In fact 21 years later (1575) he was there as a shop assistant with the bookseller Orazio Salviani and, after his death, he became the owner of that bookshop.

Francesco Soria, in his Historical-critical Memoirs of the Neapolitan historians (Naples 1781) introduces him "as a person more capable than a bookseller who became a historian".He was not appreciated by his contemporary historians in Naples and, to avoid harsh critics, he used the pen-name of Flaminio Rossi unsuccessfully. Among his greater denigrators there was Tommaso Costa, who accused him of pomposity of style and of using "some news drawn from his works without mentioning him".
Enrico Bacco died after 1607. Among his works we can recollect:
- Portraits of all the Kings of the Kingdom of Naples from Ruggiero I Norman till our times drawn by different paintings, marble statues, etc, with short news of their lives (Naples 1602);
- The Kingdom of Naples divided into twelve provinces
, with several editions when he was alive, in 1605 and 1606, then edited by Antonio Sofia in 1618 and with Cesare d'Engenio’s enlargement in 1622 and 1626 and finally with Giuseppe Mormile’s enormous addition in 1629.
- Theatre of nobility of Italy, with the pen-name of Flaminio Rossi (1607);
- Of the graces and miracles of B. Virgin of Monte Carmelo (1605);
- Life of St Martin, bishop of Tours and patron of Martina
, which was printed again in 1737.
