The Korat Registration Policy in the United Kingdom

 

 

A new KORAT Registration Policy for UK

At a full meeting of Governing Council on 29 October an amended Korat registration policy was passed with immediate effect. It is of particular importance for breeders, and buyers who are intending to breed.

The Korat Breed Advisory Committee formulated the policy, its principles were approved at the Annual General Meetings of the clubs representing Korats, and it was accepted by the GCCF Executive Committee. Much careful planning was given to take account of the Korat breeding situation in Britain, according to GCCF guidelines.

Its principle objectives are:

• a) to protect the breed;
• b) to acknowledge the variants born to Korats and give them an identity;
• c) to provide information on genetic possibilities, thus providing breeders with knowledge by which to make choices in their breeding programme

Protection

The policy ensures that the offspring of any breed other than the Korat and its variants, whether pedigree or not, cannot ever be registered as Korat. The only unregistered cats to be allowed onto the register are Korats imported directly from Thailand, where there is no registration system that corresponds to that in the west. Importers of such cats will have to provide information to KBAC and GCCF on the breeder, pedigrees and import papers. Thus the breed is able to continue in its ancient, natural form.

 

Acknowledgement

Kittens that are not blue are born to Korat parents, from time to time. These have been given the separate identities of Thai Pointed and Thai Lilac. "Breeders must not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed", is now a principle enshrined in the GCCF ethics. To ignore the variants and not inform new breeders of their possibility could contravene this. The KBAC also felt that it should take responsibility for all progeny of Korat parents.

Information and choice

By asking for the overstamping of the registration papers of Korats or do or may carry recessive colour genes informs breeders of possibilities when matings are planned. Those aiming for genetic purity will be able to do this by avoiding cats with overstamped papers. At the discretion of breeders test matings may be carried out to determine genetic make-up further. Those with evidence to satisfy the Genetics Committee can apply to have overstamping removed.

Note: those not interested in breeding, but wishing to own a Korat to show, or solely as a pet, need not be concerned with its genetic make-up. Whether or not your Korat carries recessive colour genes makes absolutely no difference to its health, colour, character, type or temperament.

A. FULL REGISTER

Blue Cats shall be registered as Korat (34) on the Full Register only if three generations (both their parents and the two preceding generations) are registered as Korat with Full or third generation Supplementary Registration.
The Registration Certificate of any Korat which is the offspring of a cat or cats which has/have proved by previous breeding to produce lilac cats, and of its descendants, shall be overstamped "MAY CARRY THE CHOCOLATE GENE".

B. SUPPLEMENTARY REGISTER

I) Blue cats with two parents which are registered Korats, but where either or both parent(s) are first or second generation Supplementary Register or third generation Reference Register, shall be registered as Korat (34) on the Supplementary Register.
II) Blue cats with a parent which is registered as "Thai Lilac" (as in Section C(i)) shall be registered as Korat (34) on the Supplementary Register. The registration certificate of all such cats to be overstamped "CARRIES THE CHOCOLATE GENE". The registration certificates of subsequent blue offspring of such cats to be overstamped "MAY CARRY THE CHOCOLATE GENE", until cleared by test matings.
III) Blue cats with a parent which is registered as "Thai Blue Point" (as in Section C(ii) shall be registered as Korat (34) on the Supplementary Register. The registration certificates of all such cats to be overstamped "CARRIES THE SIAMESE GENE" and the registration of their offspring to be overstamped "MAY CARRY THE SIAMESE GENE", until cleared by test matings.
IV) Blue cats with a parent which is registered as Thai Lilac Point, (as in Section D ii) shall be registered as Korat (34) on the Supplementary Register. The registration certificate of all such cats to be overstamped "CARRIES THE CHOCOLATE GENE" and "CARRIES THE SIAMESE GENE". The registration certificates of subsequent offspring to be overstamped "MAY CARRY THE CHOCOLATE GENE" and "MAY CARRY THE SIAMESE GENE" , until cleared by test matings.

C. EXPERIMENTAL REGISTER

I) Cats that are lilac, born to parents who have in their pedigree within three generations only Korat(34), "Thai Lilac", "Thai Blue Point or "Thai Lilac Point", shall be placed on the Experimental Register as "Thai Lilac".
II) Cats that are blue pointed, born to parents who have in their pedigree within three generation only Korat(34), "Thai Lilac", "Thai Blue Point" or "Thai Lilac Point", shall be placed on the Experimental Register as "Thai Blue Point".

D. REFERENCE REGISTER

I) Korats from Thailand with an unregistered parent or parents shall be placed on the Reference Register.
II) Cats that are lilac pointed, born to parents who have in their pedigree within three generations only Korat(34), "Thai Lilac", "Thai Blue Point", or "Thai Lilac Point", shall be placed on the Reference Register and be described as "Thai Lilac Point", until such time as these cats may receive preliminary recognition.
III) Cats with any other registered breed, or any unregistered cat, within three generations (other than those allowed for in paragraph D(i), shall be placed on the Reference Register as "of Korat type" without a breed number.

 

GM1/GM2 GANGLIOSIDOSIS TESTING SCHEME

A. ACTIVE REGISTER

Korats or Thai cats may be registered on the active register, at the breeder’s request, only if:
I) They have themselves been tested normal for GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis. Veterinary Certification of test results is required.
II) both parents have been tested normal as in A.i
b) they are from parents deemed normal because of the results from the testing, as A.i, of cats on every pedigree line in previous generations. Pedigree line in this case refers to both parents or 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 great- great-grandparents and so on, or any combination of the same which is inclusive of both the sire's and dam's ancestors

B. GENETIC REGISTER

I) Korats or Thai cats which have been genetically tested as carriers of GM1 or GM2 gangliosidosis shall be registered on the Genetic Register, or on the Non-Active Register if so requested by the breeder. Any such cats which are already registered on the Active Register shall be moved to the Genetic Register.
II) Korats or Thai cats which are not eligible for registration on the Active Register shall be registered on the genetic Register, or on the Non-Active Register if so requested by the breeder.
III) Offspring of cats registered on the Genetic Register may only be registered on the Active Register if they have themselves been tested genetically tested as normal for GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis.
IV) All other offspring of cats registered on the Genetic Register shall be registered on the Genetic Register, or on the Non-Active Register if so requested by the breeder.
